A Safe Ride

The League of American Bicyclists is promoting Bike-to-Work Week from May 16-20 and Bike-to-Work Day on Friday, May 20.  Here are preventative measures to help ensure you have a safe ride:

  • Motorists often misjudge the speed of oncoming cyclists and turn into them; make eye contact when approaching an on-coming motorist
  • Right turning motorists may turn just after overtaking a cyclist; avoid blind spots
  • Watch the front wheel of the car or look for a signal and avoid them as they turn
  • Motorists may not recognize a cyclist’s right to the road and pull out in front of them
  • Do not ride so far to the right that you are not in the motorist’s normal scanning area
  • Always wear bright cycling clothing to make yourself more visible day and night
  • Ride predictably where you will be seen and always wear a cycling helmet

Be prepared to act to avoid a collision

Think Visible

With spring showers upon us, it is essential to use caution if you are biking in the rain. Follow these few simple measures to stay visible and safe while cycling:

  • Wear a brightly colored cycling jacket; in addition reflective trim can aid your visibility to others while cycling in the rain.
  • Apply reflective lenses or tape to the wheels. This allows you to make yourself visible from the side.
  • Wear a reflective helmet.  If you slip or injure yourself and are lying in the road, it is crucial that drivers can see where your head is to avoid a devastating accident.
  • Equip your bike with an LED safety light on the front and back. These are battery-powered and extremely bright, helping motorists see you.
  • Carry a cell phone with you whenever you go for a ride. If you are struck and injured by a car, calling 911 immediately can be a lifesaver.
