Did You Ride Today?

For fifty-five years, National Bike Month has been the perfect time for new or returning riders to get back on the saddle for fun, fitness or to ride to work. Originally the Cycle Trade Association called the month American Bike Month but in the 1980s it evolved to Bike Month. Along with the name change, Bike Month became more about promoting cycling and safe bicycling, not just selling bicycles.

Did you bike today? Go get on your gear and take a bike ride before the sun goes down.

The first‐ever Bicycle Friendly University (BFU) designations were announced in March 2011 at the National Bike Summit.  Among the 32 universities that applied, 20 received designations, with Stanford University earning the only platinum‐level award. The program recognizes institutions of higher education for promoting and providing a more bicycle-friendly campus for students, staff and visitors.  They create exceptional environments where bicycling can thrive.   Cycling bags and packs are a must for the student planning to bike on campus.

During National Bike Month (May 2011), Adventure Cycling Association is working to raise money to support the creation of an official U.S Bicycle Route System (USBRS), – - once complete, it will be the largest official cycling route network in the world!

Donate $10 today to support the creation of a national network of bicycle routes: the U.S. Bicycle Route System, is a visionary project that will be similar to the national and international systems blossoming across the globe, such as Euro Vélo. The routes will connect cyclists across the U.S. with cities, transportation hubs, scenic and historic destinations through existing (and new) infrastructure; routes will be numbered, mapped, and officially recognized by state and federal government agencies.

StoreVelo supports Adventure Cycling Association.

30 states are already working to implement U.S. Bike Routes — donate today. http://www.razoo.com/p/BuildTheUSBRS2011.

What a way to celebrate National Bike Month!
